A Family Legacy Built on Quality and Care
Richard K. “Stubby” Newman launched a family-owned business in 1949 by purchasing Sanitex Cleaners in Taft, California. In 1950, with the construction of the 121 Monterey Facility, it became Sparkle Sanitex, soon evolving into Sparkle Cleaners. Stubby built a lasting reputation for quality and reliability from a single store and a network of pick-up and delivery routes.
In 1986, Stubby and his son, Jeff Newman Sr., reimagined the business, launching the Today Cleaners brand. Inspired by a trend toward self-contained dry cleaning and laundry plants—promising efficiency and customer appeal—they introduced an onpremise model offering same-day service seven days a week. The name “Today Cleaners” captured this commitment, distinguishing it in the market.
Stubby passed away in 1998, but his vision forged nearly 50 years earlier, lives on. Leadership has flowed through the Newman family, each generation enriching his legacy. Jeff Newman Sr. expanded Sparkle Cleaners, adding a linen and uniform rental division and raising service standards.
Later, his son, Jeff Newman Jr., drove innovation and quality, sharpening the distinct strengths of Sparkle Uniform and Linen Service and Today Cleaners while elevating their standards. Today, Jeff Jr.’s youngest son, Matthew Newman, carries this heritage forward, blending tradition with modern advancements to shape the future of Today Cleaners.
